  1. I Am Willing to Give Up Security for Significance- there are people that we run into every day whose #1 goal in life is security. Financial security, physical security, and emotional security.

I don't think it is wise to measure progress according to security. I think it is wiser to measure it by significance.

In other words, you will never get anywhere interesting doing the safe thing. “Most people are capable of making a living. That’s the safe thing. The significant thing is making a difference.” Any one who has done anything of great importance, whether it be a man or a woman, didn’t get recognized as such because of what they earned and owned. It was rather because of how they gave their lives to accomplish it.

  1. I Am Willing to Give Up Addition for Multiplication- John C. Maxwell explains this concept by talking about how he was early on in his career when he used to ask himself the questions, “What can I do for others?” Which is what he explains as the law of addition. Not a bad question to ask yourself, right? But then, as he learned leadership, he started asking himself the question, “What can I do with others?” Which is the law of multiplication. Again, constantly asking yourself the question of what you can do to help others, and then following through with it is something that will bring you happiness, no doubt.

But if you want to take that feeling to a whole new level, teach people how to influence other people. People bringing other people happiness.

Most people try to take too many things along with them as they journey through life. “They want to keep adding without giving anything up.” This does not work and it will catch up to you. There is only so much time in a day. At some point, you will reach your limit. “A lot can be learned about the law of trade-offs with a checkers game. Surrender one to take two.” If you want to be able to reach your highest potential, you have to be willing to make some trade-offs. As we have talked about before, simply sitting down and deciding where you are wasting time, and substituting it with the things that matter the most, will change your life so dramatically that it will take a telescope to look back and see how far you have come.
