We have arrived to Wednesday. Gangsters, ballers, and pimps take things over on Wednesdays. We are winding down to the tail end of the The Happiness Advantage. This has been a great book and one that has effected my life tremendously. In today’s lesson he talks about how wherever in the world he travels that most of the people feel like his information is useful for them, but even more useful for the people around them. “The person we have the greatest power to change is ourselves.” Here is the thing that I have learned. As we change ourselves, whether it be for the better or the worse, it has a profound effect on the people around us as well. Once we start to really engage ourselves in principles that enlighten our lives and make us better people, it has a ripple effect.

This whole process starts with your brain. As we learned in earlier blogs, our actions are constantly shaping how our brain is wired. “This means that the more you practice the principles outlined in the book, the more your mindset shifts towards the positive and the more you create habits that are long-lasting.” As your brain becomes accustomed to one good habit, the easier it is to bring on the next. And studies have actually shown that much of our behavior is contagious. Our habits, attitudes, and actions spread quickly to those around us. And it seems to spread further than we think. James Fowler once said, “I know that I am not just having an impact on my son, I am potentially having an impact on my son’s best friend’s mother.”

I had a conversation with my kids over the weekend about selfishness. In that conversation, we talked about whether the choices they were regularly making were selfish or unselfish. Truth is, my kids have a lot of work to do when it comes to living a life of unselfishness. But most of us on this blog thread probably do too. What are your intentions? When you make a decision is it better for the company or for you? Is it better for your wife or for you? Is it better for your child or for you? Are you creating habits that will teach the masses how to live better lives, be better people, and be happier? Or…are you teaching them the opposite? Remember, you will always get back what you give off. It’s the law of the land. It might take 10 years to come back to you, and it might take 10 minutes, but it will always come back. Build a legacy that people talk about far after you have gone.
