Today, Mr. Canfield talks about the 10th principle in his book, “release the brakes.” Canfield starts by asking the question, have you ever been driving down a road and suddenly realize the emergency brake has been engaged the whole duration of the drive? Upon realizing the brake was engaged, did you begin to accelerate more in order to make up for the resistance? No, you simply disengaged the brake!

Oftentimes, people drive through life with their emergency brake on. This causes people to hold onto a negative self-perception about themselves. They stay in a comfort zone they have made for themselves. Harboring guilt and self-doubt. When they attempt to accomplish goals, this negative self-perception will always cancel out their good intentions.

A great portion of the world will hold onto these negative perceptions and shy away from meaningful goals. However, those people who are among the successful of the world, will let go of their limiting beliefs, and disengage that brake. They change their negative self-perceptions and they get out of their comfort zone—a comfort zone filled with thoughts like, “I can’t do that” and “I must not do that.”

A great example of this is baby elephants in captivity. Over the course of their lives, these elephants are tied up at a young age to a small rope. As they grow, they could easily break the rope and be free, but they do not look for freedom. They have trained their minds to believe the small length of mobility is their comfort zone, and they cannot go beyond that zone. Humans do the same thing in life. They take on the limiting beliefs learned as children, and choose not to let go of those beliefs. There is good news, if this describes you; you have the ability to change your comfort zone in three different ways:

  1. Use positive affirmations and self-talk to affirm what you already want
  2. You can begin to change the negative self-perceptions for positive ones, which you want to become
  3. You can simply change your behavior

These principles work, they freaking work! Once again, if you are not waking up early to take an hour each day to self-develop, then its time to stop considering yourself as someone who truly wants to become something great. Bold words? Hell yeah!!
