So yesterday the 1st day of the month, was a totally legit day. Let’s keep it rolling! Life is good in progress-land! Today we turn to a new chapter of the book. We have 3 remaining. This chapter is called the Law of Modeling, which means it is hard to improve when you have no one but yourself to follow.

Whom should I follow? Most people who decide to grow personally find their first mentors in the pages of books. That is a great place to start. It is also a great place to continue. As I have said before, I can not begin to tell you how many times I have learned the exact steps I need to take to improve my personal, professional, and spiritual life, just by reading books early in the morning. It has changed my life.

At some point, we must find personal models too.

If you follow only yourself, you will find yourself going in circles.

Be selective when it comes to choosing your mentors and models. Two derelicts sat on a park bench and one said, “The reason I am here is because I refused to listen to anyone.” The second guy responded, “The reason I am here is because I listened to everyone.” Haha. I love this example. Neither of those courses of action are helpful.

 

John C. created a criterion to determine the “worthiness” of a mentor. Why? Because he learned a strong lesson that choosing the wrong one can set you back in a major way.

  1. A Good Mentor Is a Worthy Example – We become like the people we model and admire. They not only should this person be impressive on a professional level, but they need to be upstanding on a personal level. Gordon B. Hinckley once said,

True leadership carries with it the burden of being a great example.”

As you look for role models, scrutinize their personal lives as carefully as their public performance. “Your values will be influenced by theirs, so you shouldn’t be casual who you choose to follow.”

As I close up today’s blog, I would like to make a small tribute to one of my role models, which just so happens to be my dad. When I was young boy, I watched him closely. And I still do to this day. Throughout the course of my life he has taught me hard work, integrity, respect towards woman as he took such good care of my mom, love for his religion, and dedication to God. He also taught me to stay true to who I am and to enjoy this thing called life, because it is so great. Thanks pops. You are my main man and I am every day grateful for your influence.
