Today is Thursday! Hale to the yes! Time to get it. “Sure, there will be naysayers and skeptics who admit that happiness may make work more enjoyable but resist the notion that it can give us a real, measurable competitive advantage.” They might think that focusing on happiness in a professional setting is unnatural. Well, statistics show that you have to have 2.9013 positive interactions to every negative interaction for the business to be successful.

It also takes 6 positive interactions to every negative interaction for the business to absolutely kill it.

A CEO of a mining company put this concept to the test. At the time he started it, his company was profiting 10% less every year and had 1.15 positive interactions for every one negative. He and his employees started to really focus on learning to disagree without being disagreeable. They stopped caring about personal success and started focusing on the team’s success. Their results were amazing. The company profits saw a huge increase, but more importantly, employee satisfaction at work did too. Once we accept this order in the workplace, the concept that happiness is the center around which success orbits

We can change the way we work, interact with colleagues, and lead our teams and our careers to the competitive edge.

In all seriousness, this specific concept is something that I need to work on personally. Sometimes I get too caught up in trying to win the argument instead of agreeing to disagree. This mentality isn’t good for anyone. Especially for myself. Life is too short to fight over small things. I am not saying that it is inappropriate to stand up for what you believe and what you are passionate about. But winning the battle doesn’t always mean winning the argument. I want to challenge each of us to focus today and every day on saying 6 positive things to every negative thing. Really take the time to compliment and love people. This is the way of the world. If you are good to people, your life will be good. If you are not, you can enjoy a life of misery. Happiness is a choice!
